Archaeological Dig at Christ Kirk on the Green

Christ Kirk on the Green has been a focal point for Leslie folk for centuries.  It was the site of the church, markets and fairs, homes during the war, the gallows for hangings ... the list is endless.

Leslie Heritage Group have secured funding from The Skene Trust, the Common Good Fund and Fife Council to investigate this area with an archaeological dig!  This is a hugely exciting project for the whole community.  Who knows what will be unearthed, possibly even the remains of the 10th century wooden kirk thought to have stood on this very spot.

At last, it’s here!  We have started the dig!

Working alongside a team of archeaologists from Addyman Archeology, we have recruited over 70 enthusiastic local volunteers to get involved.  School children from Leslie Primary School came along and had a fantastic time on day 2.  Some of them enjoyed it so much they came  back with their parents the next day asking to do some more!

The dig is taking place at Christ Kirk on the Green over 5 days, starting on Thursday 11th September.  It’s not our dig, it is for the whole of Leslie and we are involving as many people as possible in this exciting project.  Why not pop along to see how we are getting on?

Below are some photos of the dig so far
